Tennessee Williams Painting Contest

February 22 @ 8:30 am - 4:00 pm

Artists invited to participate in Plein air painting contest during Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration
Recreational and professional painters are invited to participate in Key West Art & Historical Society’s Saturday, February 22, cash prize Plein air painting contest, part of the multi-event celebration held in Key West annually in honor of the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tennessee Williams, who took up painting in the later part of life.
In the spirit of this year’s celebration theme, “The Women of Tennessee Williams,” artists have the choice of three local venues associated with his “The Rose Tattoo” character Serafina, portrayed by actress Anna Magnani in the locally shot film: The Rose Tattoo House at 1421 Duncan Street, St. Paul’s Church at 401 Duval Street, and the former Key West High School at 1300 White Street (now City Hall).
Artists supply their own painting materials and easels and can collect their stamped canvas/paper beginning at 8:30am on February 22 at the Tennessee Williams Museum, 513 Truman Avenue. Finished artwork must be returned to the museum by 4:00pm, and from 5:00-6:00pm, there will be an artists’ reception, open to the public.
Blind-judging for the contest will be conducted by four arts community leaders, with first and second place winners in both the professional and recreational categories presented with $200 and $100 cash prizes, respectively, at a March 26 Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration at the museum, at which the artists are welcome to offer their paintings for sale.
Artists can register and pay the $20 entry fee at KWAHS.ORG (click ‘Events’) by  February 21 or sign up the morning of February 22 at the Tennessee Williams Museum. Contact Cori Convertito, Ph.D., at 305-295-6616 x 112 or cconvertitofarrar@kwahs.org for more information.
