Slave Trade Abolition Day

The annual South Florida community observance of the International Day of Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, as well as the Day of Healing/400-Year Remembrance will be held Sunday, Aug. 25, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
The events will be held at the Cornish Memorial AME Zion Church, 702 Whitehead St., and the Key West African Cemetery at Higgs Beach.The events honor the memory of the 295 Africans buried at the cemetery, and all who perished in the Middle Passage, as well as all those who survived.
The event at the church features exhibits, videos and a panel discussion, while the National Bell Ringing will take place at 3 p.m. for four minutes, to mark the four centuries since the 1619 arrival of the first captive Africans in the British colonies of North America.For information, call 305-904-7620 or visit
