FRINGE THEATER OFFERS PLAYWRIGHTS INTENSIVE
Fringe Theater is well known for its support of emerging playwrights. In fact, Fringe has been offering a Playwrights in Paradise workshop for the last five years, helping new (and experienced) playwrights craft short plays.
This year’s workshop will be taught by Susan Jennifer Polese, an award-winning New York playwright and a new Key West resident. “We’re very excited to welcome Susan into the Fringe community,” says Fringe Board President Janet Bengel. “We feel so honored to have yet another talented and experienced playwright to lead this workshop.”
Polese’s work has been staged throughout New York including at the La Mama Experimental Theatre Club, HERE Arts Center, The Midtown International Theatre Festival, and Planet Connections Festivity. Many of her plays reflect social issues and community challenges. Her play Under the One-Time Sky was selected as a finalist for Best Play in the 4th Annual Aery Theatre Company 20/20 One-Act Competition. Her play Suicide by Wife was nominated for two awards at the Planet Connections Festivity.
“I think of myself as a playwright and as an educator,” Polese says. She's taught playwriting through Purchase College, Axial Theatre Company, and intensives (like the one she will conduct for Fringe). She is also a member of ‘The Power of Story’ writer’s group at the Jackob Burns Film Center.
Fringe’s Playwrights in Paradise workshop will be offered in six sessions over the course of three months. The group will meet Feb 12, 19, March 18, 25, April 8 and 15. A public reading of the works developed during the intensive is scheduled for May 2nd.
Advanced registration is required to participate. Registration is $150 per person. Scholarships can be applied for by contacting the Fringe office at firstname.lastname@example.org. Registration is available online at www.fringetheater.org or via the Fringe Box Office at 305-731-0581.
