2017 KWFF Critic's Award Winner
With Special Video from Sabrina Gordon, Producer and an Intro from Michael Tuckman, Programmer, KWFF
I was asked this week to recall the most impactful film we've ever programmed at KWFF, which is basically like being asked to pick your favorite child... if you have litters the size of a lemming. "Impactful" is pretty much the main criteria for films to be programmed at KWFF. But given the events of the last two weeks, the film I can't get off my mind is QUEST, a documentary spanning 8 years - from Obama's election to Trump's inauguration - following the daily struggles and successes of the Raineys, an African-American family in North Philadelphia. Christopher "Quest" Rainey provides a creative outlet for the youth of his neighborhood with his weekly hip hop radio hour. Christina Rainey works at a women's shelter. Their daughter P.J. is in middle school. In other words, they are a family like any other family, just trying to live good lives and get by. It's a story we think we've seen before. But have we really even seen this story as told through a working-class African-American family?
At a time when so many films are being recommended to better understand these times are literally presented as black and white issues, Jonathan Olshefksi's film embraces nuance and avoids theatrics. It lets us live in this family's home, routines, and thoughts for just a bit, as we attempt to understand what it's like to live in their skin.
Quite simply, it's a masterpiece.
My voice cracked and I got choked up each time I introduced the film at the 2017 festival, where the film took home the prestigious Critics Prize Award that year.
This week, we were honored to have the film's producer, Sabrina Gordon, share her thoughts on the film and the resonance it has today.
