Actions don’t speak louder than words: words are actions. They are the most powerful tools that humans possess, having delivered greater understanding—and more damage—than any other ability or achievement known to us. Words have built, and ended, states, empires, and civilizations. Each of us utters thousands of them, in speech or writing, every day. But how often do we consider what an immense responsibility—and pleasure—that can be?
The focus of Darren Jones’ class will be words, and language, beginning with a consideration of how we use words, and how we might use them, generally; how meaningful, or meaningless, we make them; how they can be employed effectively, humorously, or incisively; and how they structure and guide every aspect of our lives. How can an appreciation, or even love, for words make us more aware of their influence and potential?
We’ll then regard words and language in the context of discussing, and writing about contemporary art, and how they might best be utilized during such discourse. We’ll consider how to employ them to agree, and disagree, well; and we’ll look at the benefits of accurate and concise language as the vehicle for understanding what art and artists seek to convey.
