Key West Art & Historical Society to Offer Free “Art After School Program” at Fort East Martello Museum
The Key West Art & Historical Society is now offering monthly Art After School classes for children aged 5 to 10 which concentrate on the art and history of Key West and the Florida Keys.  The next session takes place on Thursday, December 1, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Fort East Martello Museum, 3501 South Roosevelt Boulevard.
Led by the Society’s Education Specialist, Kassandra Collett, participants will learn about the much-revered local artist Suzie Zuzek dePoo.  She was a tenacious artist who worked in several mediums including acrylics, ceramics, mixed media, wire sculptures, and textiles.  For many years, Suzie was also the lead designer for Key West Hand Print Fabrics and was responsible for creating many of the patterns used by Lilly Pulitzer for her famous shift dresses.  In addition to her work at the factory, she also devoted time to create opportunities for other local and emerging artists.
“Key West has an incredibly diverse art community.  With this new program, we hope to keep that spirit and creativity alive by inspiring this next generation of young artists,” says Collett.  “We are very excited to welcome children to the Fort East Martello Museum to explore their creative side in a classroom setting where they can learn about local artists, explore new tools and mediums, and learn new art skills in a relaxed atmosphere.”
The Art After School program is free and open to the public.  Due to limited seating and materials, registration is required.  Classes take place in the Lee Garrison Classroom and all supplies will be provided by the Society.  For additional information about the program, visit or contact Collett at 305-295-6616 x114,  This project is sponsored in part by the Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture and the State of Florida, with additional support provided by The Helmerich Trust.  Your Museums.
