Opening reception 5.30-8.30pm
My earliest memories are of a fascination with the natural world. Due to extreme near-sightedness, I was drawn to tiny things and the ways mother nature put them together spatially.
Twenty years ago, I started assembling some of these bits into odd and unique figures I called ‘angels’ for their elongated bodies and wings of some sort.
This current body of work is a continuation of those early efforts and a further exploration of different materials and methods, alongside an extreme dislike of taxidermy. With a great reverence for all living creatures I am gratified by being able to celebrate their previous corporal presence in a current iteration and to possibly either mimic or mock evolution.

I am in search of visual magic through the investigation of mark-making with a variety of materials: oil, acrylic, graphite, pastel, watercolors, brush, knife, rag, fingers.
The selections of these processes and marks make up my subject matter, whether landscape, still life or total abstraction.
The complexities of the images are the storyline.

The boxes are a mix of antiquated fervor and violence: raw, primitive, almost Pagan. They are a re-imagining of original religious messages of Christianity under Spanish rule, where people adopt the religion then ultimately subvert it.
We took this concept a step further into today's world, where violence has become a religion… bullets become votive prayer candles, rosary beads are replaced with jewelry and saints/sinners cohabitate.

OPPOSITES ATTRACT AT JAG GALLERY
Duval Square’s Jag Gallery announces the opening of its newest exhibit, OPPOSITES ATTRACT, featuring all new works from B. Lucy Stevens and Sarah Benham, opening on Friday, April 14th.
Stevens, recently seen at The Studios of Key West with ANYWHERE BUT IN MY HEAD, a compilation of 30 years of self-reflective doodles, returns to Jag with paintings and drawings in mixed media on canvas and papers. Painting intuitively in a vibrant and expressionistic style, Lucy snapshots daily life, often with a fanciful twist and an unbridled, yet alluring energy and chorus of color.
Benham, last seen in Jag’s SMALL WORKS show , too, observes elements of daily life with a softer, less complicated, narrative style in oil, all on canvas. You long to be part of the chatter in her social gathering paintings or to get in the head of the seemingly stubborn girl in the blue bathing suit.
Join us for a preview reception, which is free and open to the public from 5-7 on Friday the 14th.
