Joshua Yarbrough Memorial Scholarship Fund will benefit at happy hour this Friday, March 17th at BottleCap.
In the nearly five years since Joshua Yarbrough passed while working as a lineman for Keys Energy, the family has put countless hours in keeping his name alive by way of the Joshua Yarbrough Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarships have benefited many Conch graduates to the tune of more than $25,000 after handing out many one-year scholarships at the end of each school year.
“The scholarship fund keeps the memory alive of the type of person he was,” Father, Tom Yarbrough says. “It’s also nice to see other kids succeeding in life. What we tell them is once you get educated pay it forward and do something for someone else like we are doing for them.”
Yarbrough’s family supports the scholarship fund through various craft projects, but the main proponent of fundraising is the Josh Yarbrough Memorial bocce doubles tournament. They also have the support of many wonderful sponsors in the Keys.
“People don’t realize how much linemen do for this country,” Yarbrough said. “Those guys go out in the middle of the night through high winds and they do a great job. Forty-one linemen lost their lives last year, and that’s not counting the ones that were hurt. It’s one of the 10 deadliest jobs.”
Aug. 30, 2017 will mark the fifth year since Josh’s death, and his father said that knowing his son is living through the scholarship winners is all the credit he needs for his hours of work.
Stop by the happy hour this Friday to support the Yarbrough family and their scholarship fund. The BottleCap is located at 1128 Simonton Street.
